Superhero movies and television shows have become common place over the last decade. The one thing that usually separates these features or heroes is that at times their super abilities separate us from them. We can't imagine them as normal people, because they aren't.
Luke Cage is the third installment of the Marvel Netflix Universe. Cage in this compelling solo series takes up the mantel of the Hero of Harlem.
What separates Cage from his predecessors is that in many cases it tackles real life issues and the protagonist of the story is seen as relatable despite his bullet proof skin and super strength. What genuinely works in this show's favor is it's authenticity. The task of creating a superhero show that truly reflects the culture of not only it's main character but the community of Harlem was no easy feat, but it easily exceeded expectations.
One of the major pros of the show is the character development of Luke Cage (Mike Colter). It immediately grabs the audience as we see him transition from a man who simply wants to work hard and mind his own business to a bonafide hero who wants to uplift his community.
I wouldn't be able to do a review of this show without mentioning the amazing musical scores and soundtrack. The musical element in this show brings a whole other level into each scene. With a great mix of hip hop, blues and jazz we see Luke Cage implement music better than any Marvel movie or show period. Even every episode title is named after a Gangstarr track.
My greatest flaw with Luke Cage is their are minor pacing issues and certain overacting by one of the later villains in the serieus. The show also often teases and hints at other major players in the Marvel universe but never pays it off with any cameos in order to keep the focus on Luke.
Overall Luke Cage is a series that comic book fans and non super hero movie enthusiast can truly enjoy. Between the action are light laughs and a story that anyone can appreciate.
