Last week I was blessed to have the opportunity to sit down and interview legendary WFTV anchor and UCF alumnus Bob Opsahl. Bob has been a staple here in Central Florida for 38 years. 38 years at one station, in one market. In today's world that's virtually unheard of. Especially in a big market like Orlando.
Sitting and talking to Bob, I'm not going to lie I was a tad bit nervous. I asked him questions relating to some of his career highs and lows and of course what he believed was the key to his long running success. He emphasized that he was blessed and surrounded with an amazing team that made everything possible.
To myself I thought this man could've easily said something on the lines of "look out for yourself" or "I do blah blah blah". Most of his answers included "we" referring to his team, his station, his family. Towards the end of the interview I asked Bob on what were some of his favorite stories? Keep in mind this a man who has covered everything from The Challenger space shuttle to Casey Anthony and George Zimmerman.
Though Bob did marvel at the space shuttle launches his eyes lit up when talking about Wednesday's Child. This was a series that ran for 25 years that helped find adoptive homes for over 500 children. This man used his gift of storytelling and giving the news to impact so many peoples lives.
Following the interview Bob told me to only try to be you and work hard and you'll be able to make it in this business. All I can say is thank you Bob and I wish you the best in your retirement.
